My Uncle Larry passed away a few weeks ago. It was not unexpected, but still very sad. He’s been a part of my life since I was a tadpole. I recently had to start walking with a cane. I am still waiting for the properly sized one to be delivered, but in the meantime I just used one my father had lying around.
The other day I was looking at the cane and noticed a brand burned into the wood. “Hand crafted by Larry Grelle.” I saw that and I got a bit choked up. My uncle may be gone, but he is still holding me up.
I think when I get my new cane I am going to hang this one up in my photo studio. I really wish I had taken a picture of my uncle before he passed, but at least I’ll have something he crafted nearby when I am working.
My uncle was a good man. He always tried to put a smile on your face. His dad jokes were about as good as my dad’s dad jokes. Although usually a little dirtier. He was always willing to help with whatever was asked of him and he played golf to the very end. He lived a simple life and always put family first.
I will miss him.
